The load comes out wet. Heating element, the thermostat, or the vent that releases moisture at the end of the cycle. Because these dry with heat rather than residual warmth, a wet load is a real fault with a real cause — and usually an inexpensive one.

The short cycle no longer cleans properly. The 30-minute programme relies on reaching temperature quickly, so a weakening element shows up there first while the long cycles still cope. It is an early warning rather than a separate fault.
