Sharp introduced the microwave drawer and it is still the one most GTA kitchens have — usually built into an island, below the counter, opened by pressing the front panel rather than pulling a handle.
When the drive fails it does not just stop cooking. It stops opening, often with food in it, and there is no door to pull. That is why we treat a stuck drawer as a same-day call rather than a routine booking.
Common Sharp Microwave Faults We Repair
The drawer will not open at all. The drive motor, a rail, or the touch-open switch on the front panel. Because there is no handle and no manual override on most models, this is the fault that leaves people genuinely stuck — and it is a mechanical repair rather than an electronic one.
It opens partway and stops, or reopens on its own. A position switch or an obstruction in the rails. The appliance will not run unless it can confirm the drawer is fully closed, so a switch reading wrongly stops the cycle before it starts.
It is installed in an island and something is wrong underneath. Island installations are accessible from one side only, and the unit has to come forward out of its cabinet before anything can be reached. Nothing about the repair is harder — the access is simply slower, and worth allowing time for.
It runs but the food comes out cold. Magnetron, high-voltage diode or capacitor. The circuit holds a dangerous charge even with the appliance unplugged, which is genuinely why this is not a do-it-yourself repair.
The front touch panel needs a firm press, or ignores you entirely. The panel assembly. On a drawer at counter height it takes more contact — and more spills — than a panel mounted above a range, so it wears faster.
It sparks or arcs inside. Stop using it. Normally the waveguide cover or the cavity coating. Both are repairable, but continuing to run it destroys the magnetron.
