Common Hotpoint Microwave Faults We Repair
The vent fan will not run, or runs constantly. Because this unit is your only extraction, this is the fault worth booking fastest. Usually the fan motor, the thermostat sensing heat from the cooktop below, or the control board. Cooking without extraction puts grease on every surface in the room.
It runs but the food comes out cold. Magnetron, high-voltage diode or capacitor. The circuit holds a dangerous charge even unplugged, which is genuinely why this is not a do-it-yourself repair — and on a basic unit it is also where the arithmetic gets tight. We will be straight with you about the numbers.
It is completely dead. Very often the line fuse, and the fuse rarely fails alone — a door switch closing out of sequence shorts the circuit and takes it with it. Replacing only the fuse guarantees a return visit, so the switches get tested at the same time.
It starts then immediately stops. The interlock switches. Several of them, forming a safety chain, and the appliance is designed to refuse to run if one has failed. That is it working correctly, not something to bypass.
Cooking smells hang around the kitchen. If the unit recirculates rather than venting outside, the charcoal filter behind the top grille is the only thing removing odour, and it cannot be washed. A great many owners have never opened that grille.
The turntable will not turn. Usually the coupler under the glass tray rather than the motor beneath it — the least expensive part in the appliance.

An over-the-range microwave sits in an awkward spot on the repair-or-replace question. It is a basic appliance, so a magnetron plus a visit can approach the cost of a new one — but it is also bolted to a wall bracket, ducted into the cabinet above and sized to the range beneath, so replacing it is never simply buying a box.
The way we resolve that is by which part has failed. A line fuse, a door switch, a turntable coupler, a vent motor or a filter is cheap and clearly worth doing on a unit that would otherwise have to be swapped out and re-mounted. A magnetron on an older unit often is not, and we will say so.
The filters underneath deserve a mention because they are the cheapest maintenance in the kitchen. Grease drawn through the appliance is what eventually kills the control panel and the fan motor, and washing the mesh filters genuinely extends the life of the unit.
