Cycles have got longer month by month and clothes come out damp. The condenser clogging with fine lint. There is a secondary filter behind the lower panel that most owners have never opened, and once the heat exchanger blocks the machine cannot shed moisture. Cleaning it can restore a dryer that seemed to be dying.

The water tank warning keeps returning after you empty it. The level sensor, or on plumbed installations the condensate pump that should be sending water to a drain rather than filling the tank every cycle.

There is water on the floor of the closet. The condensate path — tank seal, pump, or the drain hose. On a ventless dryer there is always water inside the machine, so a leak here is entirely ordinary rather than surprising, and in a closet it will find the neighbouring unit before it finds you.

It tumbles with no heat at all. On a heat-pump model that is the refrigerant circuit or a thermostat; on a condenser model, the heating element. Different repairs, different economics, so we establish which machine you have before quoting.

It will not start, or stops shortly after starting. Door switch, thermostat or control board. In a stacked installation the door switch takes more abuse than people expect, because the door is opened at an awkward angle.

It has become noticeably louder. Drum bearings, rollers or the blower. Worth catching early on a machine that has to come down out of a stack to be worked on.
