It fills and drains but will not spin. On Whirlpool’s direct-drive top-loaders this is very often the shifter actuator — a small part that switches the machine between agitate and spin. When it fails the washer runs a full cycle and simply never spins, which looks like a dead motor and is not.

The lid will not lock, or the machine stops as soon as it should spin. Lid lock assembly. Whirlpool will not spin without a confirmed lock, so a failed switch stops the machine dead. Cheap part, very common, and easy to mistake for something serious.

Water is sitting in the drum. Drain pump or a blockage in it. Coins and small items get past the drum and jam the impeller — we clear it, test it, and replace the pump only if it is actually damaged.

It is loud on spin, or the drum moves more than it should. Suspension rods on a top-loader, bearings on a front-loader. Rods are a straightforward job. A bearing is a bigger one, and on an older machine that is the point where we will talk honestly about whether it is worth doing.

It will not start at all. Lid lock, the main control board, or power to the outlet. We check the cheap causes first — a surprising number of no-start calls are a tripped breaker or a failed outlet rather than the washer.

Clothes come out soaked after the final spin. Usually the machine aborting spin because of an unbalanced load, which points back at the suspension. Occasionally the drain is partially blocked so the water never leaves in time.
