It is completely dead — no display, no light, nothing. On Whirlpool over-the-range units this is very often the line fuse, and the fuse rarely blows on its own. A failing door switch closes out of sequence, shorts the circuit and takes the fuse with it. Replacing only the fuse means it blows again on the next door close, so the switches get tested as part of the same job.

It runs but the food comes out cold. Magnetron, high-voltage diode or capacitor. This circuit stores a dangerous charge even with the appliance unplugged, which is genuinely why it is not a do-it-yourself repair. On a builder-grade unit we will be straight with you about whether the part cost justifies the age of the machine.

The unit has started to sag away from the cabinet, or the door no longer sits square. Over-the-range microwaves hang on a wall bracket with the cabinet above carrying the rest. When the mount loosens the whole appliance twists slightly, and the door stops meeting its interlocks cleanly — which shows up as intermittent no-start long before anyone notices the unit is crooked.

Cooking smells linger even with the fan on high. If the microwave vents back into the room rather than outside, the charcoal filter behind the top grille is the only thing removing odour, and it is a replace-only part. Many owners have never opened that grille. The metal grease filters underneath are washable and a separate job.

The turntable has stopped turning. Usually the plastic coupler under the glass tray rather than the motor beneath it. It is the least expensive part in the appliance and often mistaken for a serious fault.

Buttons need a hard press, or the wrong function fires. The membrane behind the panel. Heat rising from the cooktop below is what kills it, which is why over-the-range units fail here far more often than countertop ones do.
