There is a metallic flapping or clattering when the fan runs. That is the backdraft damper — a hinged flap at the duct outlet that opens under airflow and drops shut when the fan stops, keeping cold air out of the kitchen. When the hinge wears or the flap warps it chatters against the housing. Alarming, cheap, and very commonly mistaken for a failing motor.

It was converted from ducted to recirculating and now smells. Whirlpool hoods ship convertible, and installers routinely switch them without fitting the charcoal filter the recirculating mode needs. The grease filters still catch grease, so the hood looks like it is working — it just has nothing removing odour. We see this on a lot of condo and basement-suite installs.

The blower hums but barely turns, or takes a long moment to spin up. Start capacitor rather than the motor. A motor that will eventually get going but has lost its initial torque is pointing at the capacitor, and replacing that is a fraction of the cost of a blower assembly.

The rocker switches work intermittently or stick. Whirlpool’s under-cabinet hoods use a mechanical switch bank rather than a touch panel, and grease works its way into the contacts over years. It is a serviceable part, not a reason to replace the hood.

The lamps keep failing. Usually heat rather than the bulbs. A lamp sitting directly above a burner that is used hard will cook its own socket, and once the socket is heat-damaged new bulbs fail within weeks. The socket is the repair.

Extraction is weak and the filters are clean. Check the duct run before anything else. Flexible ducting that has sagged, been crushed behind a cabinet, or runs too far with too many bends will cripple a perfectly good blower — and no amount of fan replacement fixes a duct problem.
