A Hotpoint Fridge Is Simple — Which Usually Means the Fault Is Cheap
There is not much in a basic top-freezer refrigerator: a compressor, two fans, a defrost circuit, a thermostat and a door seal. That short list is why most Hotpoint fridge faults are inexpensive, and why the ones that are not tend to be obvious quickly.
Common Hotpoint Refrigerator Faults We Repair
The fridge is warm but the freezer is still cold. On a top-freezer this is nearly always the evaporator fan or a defrost fault. Cold air is made in the freezer and blown down into the fridge, so when that transfer stops the freezer carries on while the fridge slowly warms.
Ice is building up on the freezer back wall. Defrost heater, defrost thermostat, or the timer or board that decides when to run a cycle. On older Hotpoint units there is a mechanical defrost timer, which is one of the cheapest parts in any refrigerator and a very common failure.
The door does not seal and the gasket looks tired. A gasket that no longer grips is the most overlooked fault on an older fridge. It makes the compressor run far longer than it should, which raises the power bill and shortens the life of the appliance. Gaskets are replaceable and inexpensive.
It runs constantly and never cycles off. Condenser coils thick with dust, a failing condenser fan, or the seal above. On a fridge that has never had its coils cleaned, that alone can be the whole repair.
Water is pooling under the crisper. Blocked defrost drain, and a straightforward clear. Worth doing before it works out onto the floor.
Nothing is cold at all and the compressor is silent or hot to the touch. This is the one where the arithmetic matters. A start relay or overload is inexpensive and worth doing. A failed compressor on an older basic fridge usually is not, and we will tell you which you have before anything is ordered.
