It fills and agitates but will not spin. On a basic top-loader this is usually the lid switch. The machine will not spin without confirming the lid is shut, so a worn switch stops it dead — and it is one of the cheapest parts on the appliance.

Water is standing in the drum. Drain pump or something jamming it. Coins and small items get past the basket and stall the impeller. We clear and test before condemning the pump, because on a machine this simple the pump is often fine.

It will not fill, or fills very slowly. Inlet valve or the screens behind the hose connections. Those screens catch sediment and almost nobody knows they are there — clearing them is free and it is the answer more often than the valve.

It shakes violently or walks across the floor. Suspension or the tub dampers. Worth attending to promptly because a machine that keeps running out of balance will damage itself and the floor under it.

The agitator turns weakly or not at all while the motor runs. On older Hotpoint top-loaders this is often the drive coupling or the agitator dogs — small, cheap plastic parts designed to wear out before anything expensive does. That is the machine working as intended.

It will not start at all. Lid switch, timer, or power at the outlet. We check the free causes first, because a fair number of no-start calls in older homes are a breaker or a failed outlet.
