A surface element will not heat, or only works flat out. Either the element or the infinite switch behind the knob. An element with only two states — off and maximum — is pointing at the switch, and telling those apart before ordering saves you paying for the wrong one.

A coil element is arcing or has burned through at the terminal. On coil-top Hotpoint ranges the receptacle the element plugs into burns out more often than the element itself. Fitting a new element into a damaged receptacle destroys it within weeks, so both get checked together.

The oven will not reach temperature or bakes unevenly. Bake element, the igniter on a gas oven, or the thermostat. A visibly blistered or broken element is obvious; a thermostat drifting is not, and it quietly spoils baking until someone measures the cavity.

The gas oven lights, burns, then goes out. The oven igniter weakening with age. On a gas oven the igniter also holds the gas valve open, so as it ages it glows brightly without drawing enough current to keep the valve up. Classic, gradual, and often misread as a valve fault.

The oven door will not close flush. Hinges or the door gasket. A door sitting proud lets heat escape, so the oven never holds temperature and runs long — one of the cheapest faults here to put right.

The clock or timer has failed but the oven still works. On older Hotpoint ranges the clock is mechanical and separate from the cooking controls. It is a cosmetic fault, not a reason to replace a working range, and we will say so.
