It tumbles but produces no heat. Heating element, thermal fuse or the high-limit thermostat. The half that matters is why: a thermal fuse blows because airflow was restricted, never on its own. On a machine that has been in the same basement for twenty years, that duct is usually the real culprit and it gets checked as part of the job.

Cycles take two or three times as long as they used to. Restricted venting. It is also a genuine fire risk rather than an inconvenience, and on older installations the duct run is frequently long, flexible and partly crushed.

There is a rumble, thump or squeal that keeps getting worse. Drum rollers, the idler pulley or the belt. Caught early it is a routine parts job; ignored, a snapped belt can wrap the drum and damage the bearing.

The drum will not turn but the motor hums. Broken belt or a seized roller. The motor is almost always fine — it is trying to drive something that will not move.

It runs and heats but the dial never advances. The mechanical timer. A discrete replaceable part rather than a board, which is why age is no barrier here.

It is completely dead. Door switch, thermal fuse or the timer. On a gas Inglis the igniter and flame sensor come into it too. Door switch first — most common, least expensive.
