Common Inglis Washer Faults We Repair
It fills and agitates but never spins. Usually the lid switch. These will not spin without confirming the lid is closed, so a worn switch stops the machine at exactly that point in the cycle. It is among the cheapest parts on the appliance and one of the most common failures on a machine of this age.
The motor runs but the drum does not move. The drive coupling — a small plastic part designed to give way under strain so the motor and transmission behind it survive. Its failing is the machine doing what it was built to do, and replacing it restores the washer completely.
It agitates weakly and clothes come out barely cleaned. The agitator dogs, another deliberately sacrificial plastic component. Inexpensive, quick, and frequently mistaken for a worn-out machine.
Water is standing in the drum. Drain pump or something jamming it. Coins and small items get past the basket and stall the impeller — we clear and test before condemning the pump, because on a machine this simple it is often fine.
It will not fill, or fills very slowly. Inlet valve, or the screens behind the hose connections. Those screens catch sediment over decades and almost nobody knows they exist. Clearing them is free.
It stops partway and the dial does not advance. The mechanical timer. On these it is a discrete, replaceable component rather than a circuit board, which is exactly why a thirty-year-old machine can still be put right.
