Common KitchenAid Microwave Faults We Repair
It runs but nothing heats. The plate turns, the fan runs, the timer counts down, and the food comes out cold. Magnetron, high-voltage diode or capacitor. This is a sealed high-voltage circuit that holds a dangerous charge even unplugged, which is exactly why it is not a do-it-yourself repair.
The convection side has stopped working while the microwave still does. On the convection models there is a separate element and fan doing the baking, and they fail independently of the microwave circuit. Half a working appliance is a repair, not a write-off.
The drawer will not open, or will not close and start. KitchenAid’s microwave drawers run on a motorised mechanism rather than a door, so the cause is the drive, the rail or a position switch. It looks alarming and it is usually a contained repair.
It sparks or arcs inside the cavity. Stop using it. Normally the waveguide cover has failed or the cavity coating has worn through. Both are repairable, but running it in that state damages the magnetron and turns a small job into a large one.
The door will not latch, or it starts then immediately stops. The interlock switches. There are several, they are a safety system, and if one has failed the appliance is designed to refuse to run. That is it working correctly, not a fault to bypass.
The vent fan runs constantly or the light stays on. On over-the-range models this is usually the thermostat that senses heat from the cooktop below, or the control board. Harmless in itself, but it normally means something is running warmer than it should.
