It hums loudly at the start of a cycle then stops. Something hard has jammed the food disposer — a fruit stone, a shard of glass, a fragment of bone. The motor is stalling against it rather than failing. Clearing the obstruction is usually the entire repair, and replacing the pump would have been an expensive way to miss the point.

Water is sitting in the bottom at the end of the cycle. Drain pump, the disposer ahead of it, or a kinked hose behind the cabinet. This is the most common dishwasher call on any brand and rarely the most expensive.

Dishes come out with a gritty film. Spray arms blocked, wash pump losing pressure, or hard-water scale on the heating element. Toronto water is hard enough that scale is a genuine factor here rather than a sales line.

The load stays wet. Heating element, thermostat, or the vent flap that releases steam at the end. Plastics staying damp is normal on any dishwasher; a whole load staying wet is not.

It will not start. Door latch switch, control board, or power at the outlet. The latch is checked first because it is both the most likely and the cheapest.

There is water on the floor. Door seal, a hose connection, or the pump housing. On a built-in unit a slow leak soaks cabinetry and subfloor for weeks before anything shows, which is why this one is worth booking rather than watching.
