It is not holding temperature. Usually the evaporator fan, a defrost circuit that has stopped cycling, or a thermistor sending the board a bad reading. The defrost system gets checked first — a failed defrost heater looks identical to a dying compressor from outside and costs a fraction of the price to fix.

Frost keeps returning after you clear it. Defrost heater, defrost thermostat, or a door seal no longer pulling closed. If the ice came back within a month of a manual defrost, it is the heater circuit — a failing seal would take longer than that.

Built-in units are cooling unevenly. Viking’s integrated refrigeration sits flush in cabinetry with tight airflow clearances. A condenser that has collected dust in that space struggles long before a freestanding unit would, and it is worth checking before anything is condemned.

It runs and never cycles off. Dusty condenser, a failing condenser fan, or warm air getting past a seal. Book it early — a compressor that never rests does years of wear in months.

Water is pooling under the crisper or on the floor. Almost always a blocked defrost drain, and a straightforward clear. Left alone it eventually reaches the flooring.

Ice or water dispensing has stopped. Inlet valve, the supply line, or the dispenser control. In hard-water areas the valve is the usual answer.
