Most likely — extraction has faded and the filters have never been washed. Frigidaire mesh filters go straight in the dishwasher. A pair saturated with years of grease will halve the airflow of a perfectly healthy blower, and washing them costs nothing.

Next most likely — it is recirculating and the kitchen still smells. Where there is no exterior duct, a charcoal filter is the only thing removing odour, it cannot be washed, and it sits hidden behind the mesh filters. A great many owners do not know it exists.

Only some fan speeds work. The speed control or the switch rather than the motor. A blower that runs on high but not on low has not failed — the thing selecting the speed has.

The blower has become loud or vibrates. Motor bearings, an unbalanced impeller, or grease loading the fan wheel. A hood that has grown noticeably louder over a year has been telling you about this for months.

The lighting has stopped. Lamps, the socket, or the switching. A lamp directly above a hard-used burner will cook its own socket, and once that is heat-damaged new bulbs fail within weeks.

Least likely — it does nothing at all. Switch bank, wiring at the junction box, or the breaker. On a hood, the free causes are checked before anything is opened.
