A GE Range With a Dead Element Takes the Kitchen Out of Service
A range is two appliances sharing a cabinet and they fail independently far more often than people expect. A dead surface element says nothing about the oven, which usually makes the repair a good deal smaller than it first looks.

A surface element will not heat, or only works flat out. Either the element or the infinite switch behind the knob. An element with only two states — off and maximum — points at the switch, and knowing that saves you paying for the wrong part.
The Power Boil element is no longer boiling faster than the others. On GE glass cooktops the high-output element is a separate circuit, and when it drops to standard output the element or its switch has partially failed rather than the cooktop as a whole.
The oven will not reach temperature or bakes unevenly. Bake element, the igniter on a gas oven, or a temperature sensor drifting out of true. On True European Convection models there is a third element around the rear fan, so an oven that heats but no longer circulates points there rather than at the bake element.
The gas oven lights, runs, then goes out. The oven igniter weakening. On a gas oven the igniter also acts as the safety that holds the gas valve open, so as it ages it glows brightly without drawing enough current to keep the valve up. Gradual, classic, and often misread as a valve fault.
The self-clean will not start, or the door stays locked afterwards. Door lock motor, thermostat, or the board declining a cycle it cannot verify. A door still locked long after the oven has cooled is a fault, not patience.
The display is dead but the cooktop still works. Control board or its power supply. Surface elements are wired independently of the board on most ranges, which is why half the appliance keeps going.

GE sells more glass-top electric ranges into Canadian kitchens than almost anyone, and that format has its own repair profile. The elements sit beneath the glass and are switched by an infinite switch behind each knob, so the two most common faults — an element that will not heat and one that only runs flat out — are different parts with the same symptom until someone tests them.
