Whether a GE Microwave Is Worth Repairing Depends On How It Is Mounted

Common GE Microwave Faults We Repair
It runs but the food comes out cold. Magnetron, high-voltage diode or capacitor. The circuit holds a dangerous charge even with the appliance unplugged, which is genuinely why this is not a do-it-yourself repair.
The Advantium browns but no longer cooks quickly, or the reverse. These use halogen lamps for speedcooking alongside the microwave circuit, and the two systems fail independently. Half a working appliance is a repair rather than a write-off, and identifying which half has gone is most of the diagnosis.
It is completely dead. Very often the line fuse, and the fuse rarely fails alone — a door switch closing out of sequence shorts the circuit and takes it with it. Replacing only the fuse guarantees a return visit, so the switches get tested at the same time.
The vent fan runs constantly or not at all. On an over-the-range GE the microwave is also your range hood, so this is a ventilation fault as much as a microwave one. Usually the motor, the thermostat sensing heat from the cooktop below, or the board.
It starts then immediately stops. The interlock switches. Several of them, forming a safety chain, and the appliance is designed to refuse to run if one has failed. That is correct behaviour, not something to defeat.
Buttons need a hard press, or the wrong function fires. The control panel. Heat and grease rising from the range below are what kill it, which is why over-the-range units fail here far more often than countertop ones.

GE is the only brand in this tier selling a speedcook oven under the microwave heading, and it changes the repair conversation completely. An Advantium uses halogen lamps to cook with light alongside a conventional microwave circuit and a convection element — three cooking systems in one cavity, at a price several times a normal over-the-range unit.
Because those systems are independent, an Advantium that has lost one still has the others. A unit that microwaves but no longer browns has a lamp or lamp-control fault, not a dead appliance, and the owner is frequently told otherwise. These are worth diagnosing properly before anyone quotes a replacement, because the replacement is a four-figure decision.
The halogen lamps themselves are consumables. They have a service life, they are replaceable, and a speedcook oven that has slowed down is often asking for lamps rather than repair.
On the conventional GE units the economics are simpler: a countertop model is usually cheaper to replace, an over-the-range one is not, because it is bracketed, ducted and doing your kitchen’s extraction. Line fuses, door switches, magnetrons, diodes, capacitors, halogen lamps and controls, vent motors, filters and control panels are all replaceable and stocked.
