The fan is silent and you cannot find anything wrong at the hood. Check whether yours has a remote blower. GE offers ventilation where the motor is not in the hood at all — it sits inline in the ductwork or outside the house, so a dead fan means a fault in a unit that is nowhere near the kitchen. Owners understandably conclude the hood has died. It usually has not.

Extraction is weak on an island or chimney unit. Island installations have the longest duct runs in any kitchen, and every extra metre and every bend costs airflow. Where the run is right, the filters or the blower wheel are next. Where it is not, no motor will fix it.

It was converted to ductless and now the kitchen smells. GE hoods ship convertible, and an installer switching one to recirculate without fitting the charcoal filter leaves you with a hood that moves air and removes nothing. The grease filters still work, so it looks like it is functioning.

The halogen lamps keep failing. Heat rather than the bulbs. A lamp above a hard-used burner cooks its own socket, and once the socket is damaged replacements fail within weeks. The socket is the repair, and LED conversion is often the better answer.

There is a rattle or a clatter when the fan starts and stops. The backdraft damper at the duct outlet — a hinged flap that opens under airflow and drops shut afterwards. A worn or warped flap chatters against its housing and sounds far worse than it is.

The hood runs but the kitchen still sets off the smoke alarm. Usually a capture problem rather than a fan problem: a hood mounted too high, or too narrow for the range beneath it, will never catch what it cannot reach. We will tell you if that is what you have, because no repair fixes it.
