Extraction has gone weak while the fan still sounds normal. Usually filters past saturation, sometimes ductwork, occasionally a blower losing speed. The tell is steam and cooking smells lingering at a setting that used to clear them in seconds.

The blower has become loud, or rattles and drones. Motor bearings, an unbalanced impeller, or grease built up on the fan wheel. A hood that has grown noticeably louder over a year has generally been telling you about this for months.

The lighting has stopped. Lamps, the driver, or the switching. KitchenAid hoods use integrated lighting rather than a simple socketed bulb on most models, so it is a component replacement rather than something to swap yourself.

Only some fan speeds work. Almost always the speed control or the switch rather than the motor. A blower that runs on high but not on low has not failed — the thing selecting the speed has.

The controls have stopped responding. Touch panel or control board. On island and chimney units the controls often sit apart from the blower housing, which adds one more place for the fault to live.

It switches itself on, or will not switch off. Usually a heat sensor or a stuck control rather than a fan fault. On models mounted directly above a range, a sensor that has drifted makes the hood look like it has a mind of its own.
