The oven will not hold temperature, or everything browns unevenly. Bake element, the igniter on a gas oven, or a temperature sensor drifting out of true. A sensor ten degrees out gives no warning at all — it simply spoils baking until somebody puts a meter in the cavity.

A surface element is dead, or only works on full. The element itself or the infinite switch behind the knob. An element with only two states, off and maximum, is pointing at the switch — and knowing that saves you paying for the wrong part.

The gas oven lights, burns, then goes out. The oven igniter weakening with age. On a gas oven the igniter is also the safety device that holds the gas valve open, so as it ages it glows brightly without drawing enough current to keep the valve up. Gradual, classic, and frequently misdiagnosed as a valve fault.

A gas burner clicks continuously but will not light. Igniter electrode, a blocked port, or the spark module. One module fires every electrode at once, so a single cracked igniter sets the whole cooktop clicking — which sounds much worse than it is.

The self-clean will not start, or the door stays locked afterwards. Door lock motor, thermostat, or the board refusing a cycle it cannot verify. A door still locked long after the oven has cooled is a fault rather than patience.

The display is dead but the cooktop still works. Control board or its power supply. Surface elements are wired independently of the board on most ranges, which is why half the appliance keeps going.
