Water is sitting in the bottom at the end of the cycle. Drain pump, the chopper ahead of it, or a kinked hose behind the cabinet. If your kitchen has an air gap fitting on the counter, check that first — it blocks with debris and stops the machine draining, and clearing it costs nothing.

It hums at the start of a cycle then stops. Something hard has jammed the chopper or the wash pump — a fruit stone, a shard of glass, a fragment of bone. The motor is stalling against it rather than failing, and clearing the obstruction is usually the whole repair.

Dishes come out gritty or with a white film. Spray arms blocked, the wash pump losing pressure, or hard-water scale on the heating element. Toronto water is hard enough that scale is a genuine factor rather than a sales line.

It will not start. Door latch switch, the timer, or power at the outlet. The latch is checked first because it is the most likely and the cheapest, and on these the latch and switch are often a single part.

The load comes out wet. Heating element or thermostat. On a basic machine there is no drying fan and no clever final stage — it is heat, so wet dishes point at a very short list.

There is water on the floor. Door seal, a hose connection or the pump housing. On a built-in unit a slow leak soaks cabinetry and subfloor for weeks before anything shows.
