Water is sitting in the bottom at the end of the cycle. Drain pump, the chopper blade that breaks food down before it reaches the pump, or a kinked hose behind the cabinet. If the machine has a manual filter we check that first, because it is free to clear and it is often the whole answer.

Dishes come out gritty or with residue. Spray arms blocked, the wash pump losing pressure, or a filter overdue a clean. A spray arm that will not spin freely by hand has already told you most of what a diagnosis would.

It will not start. Door latch switch, control board, or power to the appliance. The latch is checked first — most common and least expensive. On older Kenmore units the latch also carries the door switch, so one part covers both symptoms.

Dishes come out wet. Heating element, thermostat, or the vent flap that releases moisture at the end. Plastics staying damp is normal on any dishwasher; a whole load staying wet is not.

There is water on the floor. Door seal, a hose connection or the pump housing. On a built-in unit a slow leak runs into cabinetry and subfloor for weeks before anything appears, which is why this one is worth booking promptly.

It hums but nothing happens. Usually a seized wash pump or a jammed chopper. Something hard has found its way into the sump — glass, a fruit stone, a bone fragment — and the motor is stalling against it.
