It shuts off after a few minutes claiming the load is dry. The moisture sensor bars in the drum read conductivity, and fabric softener residue insulates them until the machine believes everything is dry within minutes. Frequently a clean rather than a part.
There is a squeal, thump or rumble that is getting worse. Drum rollers, idler pulley or the belt on the Whirlpool-built units. Caught early it is a routine parts job; left running, a snapped belt can damage the drum bearing.
Cycles take two or three times as long as they did. Restricted venting almost every time. It is also a genuine fire risk, which is why we treat a slow dryer as urgent rather than a nuisance.
The drum will not turn but you can hear the motor. Broken belt or a seized roller. The motor is fine — it is trying to drive something that will not move.
It is completely dead. Door switch, thermal fuse or the control board. On a gas Kenmore the igniter and flame sensor come into it as well. The door switch is checked first because it is the most common and the cheapest.
