The switches do nothing, or work only when wiggled. Kenmore hoods use a mechanical rocker or slide switch bank rather than a touch panel, and after fifteen years of steam and grease the contacts are corroded. This is the most common fault we see on these and it is a straightforward part.

The fan hums but barely turns. Almost always the motor’s start capacitor rather than the motor itself. A blower that eventually gets going but has lost its initial push is pointing at the capacitor, and that is a fraction of the cost of a new blower assembly.

Extraction has faded and the filters are clean. Look at the duct run. Flexible ducting that has sagged, been crushed behind a cabinet during a renovation, or runs too far with too many bends will defeat a perfectly healthy fan. No amount of motor replacement fixes a duct problem.

The light works but the fan does not, or the reverse. They are separate circuits through the same switch bank, so one failing while the other works narrows the fault to the switch rather than the wiring.

There is a rattle or clatter when the fan runs. Usually the backdraft damper at the duct outlet — a hinged flap that opens under airflow and drops shut afterwards. A warped or worn flap chatters against its housing and sounds far more serious than it is.

The lamp keeps failing. Usually heat rather than the bulbs. A lamp sitting directly above a hard-used burner will cook its own socket, and once the socket is damaged new bulbs fail within weeks. The socket is the repair.
