It runs but the food comes out cold. Magnetron, high-voltage diode or capacitor. The circuit holds a dangerous charge even with the appliance unplugged, which is genuinely why this is not a do-it-yourself repair.
It is completely dead. Usually the line fuse, and the fuse rarely fails alone — a door switch closing out of sequence shorts the circuit and takes it with it. Replacing only the fuse guarantees a return visit, so the switches get tested at the same time.
It starts then immediately stops. The interlock switches. Several of them, forming a safety chain, and the appliance is designed to refuse to run if one has failed. That is it working correctly, not something to bypass.
The vent fan will not run on an over-the-range model. On those the microwave is also your range hood, so this is a ventilation fault as much as a cooking one. Usually the motor, the thermostat sensing heat from below, or the switch.
It sparks or arcs inside. Stop using it. Normally the waveguide cover has failed or the cavity coating has worn through — both repairable, but running it in that state destroys the magnetron.
The turntable will not turn. Usually the coupler under the glass tray rather than the motor beneath it, and the least expensive part in the appliance.
