It runs a full cycle but never spins (110 series). On the Whirlpool-built top-loaders this is usually the shifter actuator — the small assembly that switches the machine between agitating and spinning. The washer sounds completely normal right up until the moment it should accelerate, which is why owners assume the motor has died. It has not.

It stops mid-cycle and reports a fault (796 series). On the LG-built Elite machines the rotor position sensor and the drain pump are the usual suspects. These use a direct-drive motor with no belt, so a spin failure points at the sensor telling the board where the rotor is rather than at anything mechanical.

The lid or door will not lock. No Kenmore will spin without a confirmed lock, so a failed switch stops the machine dead and looks catastrophic. It is one of the least expensive parts on the appliance.

Water is sitting in the drum. Drain pump or a blockage in it. Coins and hairpins get past the drum and jam the impeller — we clear it, test it, and only replace the pump if it is genuinely damaged.

It bangs and walks across the floor on spin. Suspension rods on a top-loader, bearings or shocks on a front-loader. Rods are straightforward. A bearing on a fifteen-year-old machine is where we will give you an honest opinion on whether to spend the money.
