A surface element will not heat, or only works flat out. Either the element or the infinite switch behind the knob. An element with only two states — off and full — is pointing at the switch, and that distinction saves you paying for the wrong part.
The oven will not reach temperature or bakes unevenly. Bake element, the igniter on a gas oven, or a temperature sensor drifting out of true. A sensor ten degrees out never announces itself; it just spoils baking quietly until somebody measures the cavity properly.
A gas burner clicks but will not light. Igniter electrode, a blocked port, or the spark module driving it. One module fires every electrode at once, so a single cracked igniter makes the whole cooktop click — which sounds far worse than it is.
The gas oven lights, runs, then goes out. The oven igniter weakening. On a gas oven the igniter also acts as the safety that opens the gas valve, so as it ages it glows without drawing enough current to hold the valve open. Classic, gradual, and often misread as a valve fault.
The door will not close flush and heat escapes. Hinges or the door gasket. A door sitting a few millimetres proud makes the oven miss temperature and run long, and it is one of the cheapest faults here to put right.
The clock and display are dead but the cooktop works. The control board or its power supply. On older Kenmore ranges the surface elements are wired independently of the board, which is why half the appliance keeps working.
