Whether a Kenmore Microwave Is Worth Repairing Depends On Where It Is Mounted

It runs but nothing heats. Magnetron, high-voltage diode or capacitor. The circuit holds a dangerous charge even unplugged, which is genuinely why this is not a do-it-yourself job. On an over-the-range unit it is usually worth doing; on a countertop one it usually is not, and we will tell you which yours is.
It is completely dead. Very often the line fuse, and the fuse rarely fails alone — a door switch closing out of sequence shorts the circuit and takes it with it. Replacing only the fuse guarantees a repeat visit, so the switches get tested at the same time.
It starts then stops immediately. The interlock switches. There are several and they are a safety system; if one has failed the appliance is designed to refuse to run. That is it working properly, not something to defeat.
The vent fan runs constantly or not at all. On an over-the-range Kenmore the microwave is also the range hood, so this is a ventilation fault as much as a microwave one. Usually the motor, the thermostat sensing heat from the cooktop, or the board.
Cooking smells hang around. If the unit recirculates rather than venting outside, the charcoal filter behind the top grille is the only thing removing odour and it cannot be washed. A great many owners have never opened that grille.
The turntable will not turn. Usually the plastic coupler under the tray rather than the motor beneath it — the least expensive part in the appliance.
